The ‘thigh gap’ of the Fashion Industry

“Obesity means having too much body fat. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. The weight may come from muscle, bone, fat, and/or body water. Both terms mean that a person’s weight is greater than what’s considered healthy for his or her height.”

Right… the above quote refers to Body Mass Index (BMI). Which is absolute bull shit. According to my BMI  I am slap bang in the middle of the ‘overweight’ section. Now, yes I do have a few more kg’s than what is considered ‘healthy’ but with that, for me to be ‘healthy/normal’ weight I should weigh 63-65kg’s… So seems fair enough, right? NO! Does the BMI calculation take into consideration that I have size 8 feet, man sized hands and of course those orangutan arms that I have mentioned before here.

The last time I weighed 60kg’s I was like 12years old, dude. So wtf!?

My goal weight is 70-75kg’s which is what I was weighing when my husband and I started dating. But according to BMI I will be borderline ‘normal-overweight’. Whatever.

“Obesity occurs over time when you eat more calories than you use. The balance between calories-in and calories-out differs for each person. Factors that might affect your weight include your genetic makeup, overeating, eating high-fat foods, and not being physically active.”

Yes, yes we know, eat healthier, eat less and exercise.

So you think well fuck it, lets get a personal trainer, they will push me more than I push myself. And with that we go shopping for exercise clothes…

Have you seen or even looked for plus size exercise clothing? Next time you walk passed the yoga pants and racer back tops, stop for a moment and just look at the sizes available. 32 – 38… So if you are a size 40 or larger, you will constantly have family, friends and professionals telling you how dangerous it is to be overweight or obese, and you really should take better care of yourself.

So what, should you go walking/jogging in Jeans?

Makes no freaking sense why exercise clothes aren’t made in larger sizes. Not too be a complete arsehole here, but overweight people need exercise clothes more than normal weight people, or am delusional?

Yes you are fat, but there is nothing you can do about it.

While there are clothing stores that do accommodate for the larger framed woman, their designs freaking suck.

So being overweight means you get belittled all the time, have to wear frumpy old styled clothing and exercise in jeans or pajamas…

I mean honestly, we all have parts of our bodies that we are uncomfortable with, even that gorgeous woman you see at the mall that looks flawless, there is something she hates about her physical appearance too.

So why are there not more weight conscience and flattering clothes?

No cut outs, crop tops, bodycon and sheer insets styles, larger woman don’t want to show off their bodies that they are already so self-conscience about.

Even just finding decent bra’s for bustier women with out paying an arm and a leg for it?

Love her no care attitude and confidence, but that bra does not look supportive…

The clothing stores that specialize in larger woman clothing call themselves ‘Plus size’. Plus size is not overweight or obese woman. Plus size woman are curvier & larger than petite woman. Do these stores not know that average every day women exist?

The specialized stores also only stock sizes up to 36 – 48 or so, what about the women larger than 48? Must they just walk around naked until they lose weight, oh right no exercise clothes either, so there’s that solution… Also woman that wear size 36 – 40 can buy from most of the larger retail stores that have normal sizes too.

These ladies shop in the Plus size section…
These are plus size models… Do you see the issue?

Why make a specialized ‘plus-size’ clothing store and then still accommodate for the smaller sizes?? You are a specialized store. Do your job and focus on the specialty you are advertising! There are so many different clothing stores and so little ‘Plus-size’ yet lets accommodate the people not struggling to dress themselves. Honestly.

Judge them because of their weight but not help?
